3 items you NEED to take care of your clothes
It’s a question I used to ask my mum, and it’s now a question I get asked a lot of the time by clients. If I invest in good quality clothes, how do I take care of them?
If you are like me and you want the quickest and easiest way to make the most of your money, you need these three items:
Handheld Steamer
Fabric Shaver
Delicate Wool Wash & Garment Bag
Hand Held Steamer
A hand held steamer is a quick and savvy way to get the creases out of your clothes without having to bring out the ironing board. Depending on your budget, there are some great options out there. These steamers are also great for travelling if you roll your clothes and stay somewhere without ironing facilities.
A handheld steamer is easy to use and can soften your fabrics to make them look crisp and ready to wear. Simply hang the item on a door handle, architrave, portable rack and steam away!
(Always read the label of your clothes before steaming and ironing so you don’t ruin or mark the fabric)
Personally, I love steaming my linen pants, cotton shirts and longer dresses that are too fiddly to put onto my ironing board.
Some of my favourite steamers on the market are:
Kmart Hand Held Garment Steamer
$39
Sunbeam Power Shot Handheld Garment Steamer
$49
Russell Hobbs 2-1 Steamer Supreme
$139
(this is an iron & steamer in one, but the iron function works without needing an ironing board)
Fabric Shaver
You may be thinking… what is a fabric shaver?! I was just as confused as you the first time I heard about it. But a fabric shaver is literally life changing. If you buy clothes that are prone to pilling, then this is a MUST in your tools to maintain the quality of your pieces.
They are cost effective and if used properly (always read the instructions) they can remove all the fuzz to make your clothes look new again.
Here is where you can buy one:
$17
Delicate Wool Wash & Garment Bag
I am going to sound like my mother again here, but it wasn’t until I started looking into fabrications that I acknowledged how important it is to be washing and taking care of my garments correctly. I have had a couple of clients who are quite time poor and prefer clothes that can be chucked into the washing machine without a worry, however if you have one of these you may be able to get around the need to be best friends with your local dry cleaner.
I always recommend reading the instructions on the label of the clothes, however if they can be washed delicately you MUST put it in a garment bag and use a delicate wool wash to protect the fabric, and your skin!
Here are my top two favourites:
$12.99
$7.99
Taking care of your clothes properly not only help them to last longer, but they will still look new when you put them on.
